Be careful where you upload files: Cybersecurity researchers highlight a new ransomware threat to browsers
Briefly

My colleagues and I have shown how hackers can gain access to your computer's files via the File System Access Application Programming Interface (API) in modern browsers.
Today's browsers acting almost like operating systems can manipulate data within the computer's file system, providing hackers with new opportunities for ransomware attacks.
Developers of the File System Access API expressed support for defending against attacks, but response from Microsoft, whose Edge browser is affected, remains pending.
Chrome and Edge browsers, which account for 70% of browser usage, are vulnerable to ransomware attacks through the File System Access API; Apple's Safari and Mozilla's Firefox are not susceptible.
