A brief history of LGBTQ+ representation on Broadway

Broadway has been slow to tell LGBTQ+ stories sympathetically. Until the '70s and '80s, LGBTQ+ individuals were either ignored or pathologized due to prevailing homophobia.
In the first half of the 20th century, Broadway briefly portrayed coded queer characters often through jokes or negative representations, such as Ann and Martha in The Children’s Hour.
