Op-ed: Division over migrant crisis will breed only more chaos

In the past year, an even more complex dynamic has unfolded - the arrival of more than 30,000 refugees from Ukraine and more than 20,000 asylum-seekers, largely from Venezuela, who have fled from political and economic turmoil in their home countries.
The division has manifested itself in violent community protests, harsh statements from groups that have traditionally fought for civil rights and chaotic City Council meetings
Our housing crisis predates the new arrivals who have been seeking refuge in our city over the past year. Decades of systemic disinvestment in Black and brown communities, coupled with the impact of the recent pandemic have led to a lack of affordable housing, population loss, underenrollment in our schools, violence and a dwindling workforce.
