Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian labor camp but eventually was traded for Bout, while Whelan was left behind. She soon found out how politicized her case had become in the United States.
Griner's memoir about her experience, 'Coming Home,' written with Michelle Burford, is being released Tuesday. Griner recently sat down for an interview in San Diego, where the Phoenix Mercury held their preseason training.
