China tops the U.S. on AI research in over half of the hottest fields: report

Roughly 32% of AI research focused on computer vision, growing by 121% from 2017 to 2022. Natural language processing accounted for 11% and grew 104%, while robotics research only grew by 54%.
AI safety research grew by 315%, making up just 2% of all AI research. Federal investment is deemed necessary for ensuring AI deployed in the real world is safe, secure, and understandable.
Chinese institutions, led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, produce the most AI research globally. While historically seen as high in quantity but low in quality, they now lead in highly cited papers.
CSET's research highlights the need for basic measurement and evaluation techniques to ensure AI deployment safety, yet appropriations for this purpose have been recently cut from the National Institutes of Standard and Technology.
