City Looks to Hike Water Rate by 8.5% in FY25
Briefly

The proposed 8.5% water rate increase in FY25 aims to address the over $1 billion balance in water and sewer receivables that grew due to the stoppage in lien sales since FY2019.
DEP began mailing Water Shutoff Notices to over 600 delinquent accounts, resulting in $3 million in payments; they are also collaborating to collect from multi-family properties with large unpaid balances.
The Administration is in talks with the City Council to possibly reauthorize the lien-sale, which historically helped manage past-due water and sewer bills and now contributes to the need for the rate increase.
The proposed rate increase will be up for review and approval by the NYC Water Board, with public hearings scheduled in all five boroughs in May and June for resident feedback.
