Monkeypox cases spike in NYC - with Big Apple averaging dozens of cases per month
Briefly

Since October, the city of New York has seen a spike in monkeypox cases, with a high of 51 cases in January, averaging 36 cases per month compared to 2-20 cases in 2022.
Of the 256 reported cases from October to April, the majority were mild with only 10 hospitalizations. The affected demographics were primarily Black or Hispanic men aged 25-44.
73% of those infected in New York were unvaccinated or had only received one dose of the vaccine. Monkeypox spreads through close contact and bodily fluid exchange.
No cases of the more deadly Clade I subtype of the virus are in the US, but there is a risk of introduction due to a recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
