Former teacher Jessica Tapia received $360,000 settlement from Riverside County district after being fired for not complying with transgender student policies and citing religious beliefs.
Attorney Fleischer emphasized the importance of accommodating Tapia's religious beliefs and highlighted that the settlement sends a message against asking teachers to lie or withhold information.
Jurupa Unified School District settled without admitting wrongdoing, paying $285,000 to Tapia and $75,000 for attorney fees; Tapia agreed not to seek future employment with the district.
District spokesperson Jacquie Paul stated that the settlement was a compromise made to focus on students' education and support, irrespective of their protected class status.
