On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron remained in the French capital to head crisis management meetings on New Caledonia after days of violence, deaths, injuries, and arrests.
New Caledonia, first visited by British explorer James Cook in 1774, was formally taken over by France in 1853 and initially used as a penal colony before mining industries developed.
