What We Did Before the Sandwich

It is commonly said that John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, would order his valet to bring him salt beef between two pieces of toasted bread during long sessions of cribbage and other card games.
While Montagu may have popularized the sandwich, people had been eating variations of it for centuries before his time.
In ancient Greece, they had a similar concept called obelios, which was a type of flatbread with a filling in the middle.
