Flood defence walls in London need to be half a metre higher for protection against climate change. The Thames Barrier, in operation until 2070, has prevented flooding 221 times saving properties, infrastructure, and lives.
Without the Thames Barrier, storm surges would submerge buildings along the Thames, risking lives and causing severe damage. Sea level rise and intense storms from climate change will require increased flood defences in the future.
