The Sharks won the draft lottery and will have the first overall selection in the NHL Draft for the first time in franchise history.
The Sharks will use the No. 1 overall pick on Boston University center Macklin Celebrini, widely considered the best player in this year's draft.
By finishing with the NHL's worst record, the Sharks had the greatest chance of winning at 25.5% and could fall no further than third overall.
Celebrini, 17, has drawn comparisons to former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and is seen as a key addition for the Sharks' prospect pool and fan excitement.
