1999 Yankees Diary: Honoring DiMaggio with a sweep
Briefly

Although standings in April are not crucial, winning is essential for a strong summer start. Facing a rival above you is a chance to make a statement.
Just a few weeks prior to the start of the 1999 season, Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio passed away at age-84 after a battle with lung cancer. Prior to the game, the team dedicated a monument to him and in center field, Paul Simon sang "Mrs. Robinson."
To this day, it is the most recent monument dedicated to a player in Monument Park. Since then, only George Steinbrenner and the victims of 9/11 have been similarly immortalized at Yankee Stadium.
David Cone continued his strong start to the season for the Yankees, retiring 16 of the next 21 batters he faced after surrendering a solo home run. Cone had a dominant outing against the Texas Rangers in his previous start.
