A bus carrying farmworkers collided with a pickup truck and overturned in central Florida, killing eight people and injuring about 40 others. The workers had been headed to Cannon Farms in Dunellon, harvesting watermelons.
Federal statistics show that vehicle crashes were the leading cause of job-related deaths among farmworkers in 2022, with 81 out of 171 fatalities attributed to such incidents.
The Labor Department announced new seat belt requirements for employer vehicles used for farmworkers on temporary visas, with other protections taking effect in June. The Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association opposed the seatbelt mandate.
