I always find myself drawn to retrospectives of a particular artist, because they allow me to learn how someone develops... how life's experience(s) can shape the evolution of creativity and skill.
Seeing the works of many artists riff off one another allows an assessment of the current state of the art and often helps me to understand my own reaction to art better.
